How to get sorted, step by step
- Check your passport has at least 30 days validity beyond your departure and two genuinely blank pages - this is enforced and people are refused boarding for it.
- If you are travelling with anyone under 18, carry an unabridged birth certificate showing both parents, and consent letters if not both are travelling.
- Buy a Type M plug adapter before you leave - the South African plug is not a standard travel-adapter shape.
- Arrange travel insurance and, if you are going to a malaria area such as Kruger, see a travel doctor about prophylaxis.
What catches Australians out
Two genuinely blank passport pages are required, and airlines refuse boarding without them. Endorsement pages at the back do not count.
Travelling with children requires an unabridged birth certificate naming both parents, plus a consent letter from any parent not travelling. This is unusual and strictly enforced.
South Africa uses the Type M plug, a large three-round-pin design used almost nowhere else. Standard universal adapters often do not include it.
Load shedding - scheduled rolling power cuts - still happens. Most hotels have generators; check yours does.
Health cover for Australians in South Africa
Australia has no reciprocal health care agreement with South Africa. Private hospitals in Cape Town and Johannesburg are excellent and expensive; public facilities are not an option for visitors. Insurance is essential.
Vaccinations: Hepatitis A and typhoid usually recommended. Malaria prophylaxis is advised for Kruger and the low-veld between roughly September and May - see a travel doctor 6-8 weeks ahead.
Medications: Bring prescriptions in original packaging with a copy of the script. Pharmacies in cities are well stocked.

How these comparisons are made
Entry rules on these pages come from the destination's own immigration authority first, Smartraveller second, and the destination's embassy in Australia third - each page links the exact sources it used. An automated job re-reads those government pages every day and moves the review date only when a person or the checker has confirmed the page still says what we say it says.
