How much passport validity do you need?

Almost every travel site tells Australians the answer is six months. For 19 of the 36 destinations here, it is not.

There is no single rule - it is set by the country you are flying to.

Of the 36 destinations on this site, 17 require six months beyond the day you arrive. 7 only need a passport valid for your stay, including Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. The nine Schengen countries want three months beyond the day you leave the area. Airlines check this at the departure gate in Australia, so a passport that is a week short stops the trip before it starts.

Is the six-month passport rule real?

It is real in the sense that 17 of these 36 destinations do require it. It is not real as a universal rule, and treating it as one costs Australians money on renewals they did not need and, occasionally, a flight they could have taken.

The rule exists because a country that admits you wants headroom in case you overstay, fall ill or cannot fly home on schedule. Countries that trust the arrangement they have with Australia - Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand - do not ask for it. The United States exempts Australian passport holders from its own six-month requirement, which is why an Australian passport needs only to cover the stay.

The part that catches people is what the clock starts from. Six months from arrival and three months from departure are different tests, and for a long trip they can be weeks apart. A passport that clears Thailand can fail for Bali on the same booking.

What to do if your passport is too short

Renew before you book

The Australian Passport Office quotes around six weeks for a standard adult renewal, with a priority service for an extra fee. Book flights after, not before.

Your old number changes

A renewed passport has a new number, so any visa, ETA or arrival card already tied to the old one has to be redone.

Check the rest of the trip

Validity is one of several things checked at the gate. The trip checklist covers the visa, the authorisation and the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Do Australians need six months on their passport?

Not everywhere. It is the most common rule but it is not universal. Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United States all admit Australians on a passport that is simply valid for the stay. The Schengen countries want three months beyond the day you leave the area, not six from arrival. Check the country you are actually flying to.

Is the six-month passport rule counted from arrival or departure?

It depends on the country, and the difference can be weeks. Most of Asia counts six months from the day you land. The Schengen countries count three months from the day you leave. South Africa counts 30 days from departure. A passport that clears one rule can fail another for the same trip.

What happens if my passport is too short?

The airline refuses to board you in Australia. Carriers check passport validity at check-in because they carry the cost of flying anyone home who is refused entry, so it is caught before you fly rather than at the border. Travel insurance does not generally cover a trip you could not start for this reason.

How long does an Australian passport take to renew?

The Australian Passport Office quotes about six weeks for a standard adult renewal, and a priority service for an extra fee. Renew before you book anything non-refundable if you are close to a limit.

Does the ten-year rule for Europe affect Australian passports?

Rarely. The Schengen rule is that the passport was issued within the last ten years as well as being valid three months beyond departure. Australian adult passports are issued for ten years and children for five, so an unexpired Australian passport satisfies it automatically. It catches travellers on passports from countries that used to issue longer ones or add extension pages.
