🇿🇦 South Africa
Visa-free for 90 days, and a plug type you cannot improvise.
No - Australian passport holders can enter South Africa without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism.
Pack a Type M/N/C adapter for the 230V supply, one Australian dollar buys about 11.4 ZAR, and Traveller declaration is compulsory on arrival.
Entry rules last checked 24 October 2026.
South Africa gives Australians 90 days visa-free with nothing to apply for, which makes it one of the easier long-haul destinations to organise. Two things need real preparation: the country uses a large three-round-pin plug found almost nowhere else, and travelling with children requires documentation most countries do not ask for.

Best time to visit
May-September for safari, November-March for Cape Town
The seasons are opposite ends of the country: dry winter is best for game viewing in Kruger because the bush thins and animals gather at water, while Cape Town is at its best in the southern summer.

Health & safety
Smartraveller: Exercise a high degree of caution
Australia has no reciprocal health care agreement with South Africa. Private hospitals in Cape Town and Johannesburg are excellent and expensive; public facilities are not an option for visitors. Insurance is essential.
Emergency: 112 from a mobile
Money
Excellent. South Africa is a card country and contactless works nearly everywhere, including in townships and at petrol stations.
Use ATMs inside bank branches or shopping centres rather than street-facing machines, and never accept help from a stranger at one.
Tipping: Expected and part of how people are paid: 10-15% in restaurants, R5-R10 for a car guard in a car park, and R100-R200 per day for a safari guide.
Language & culture
English is one of 12 official languages
English: Excellent - English is universal in cities, business and tourism
Capital: Pretoria (Cape Town is the legislative capital)

Last recorded rate
These are mid-market rates - the rate banks trade at, published by the European Central Bank. It is not what you will be offered. Expect a card or exchange service to take 0.5% to 5% off it, which is exactly what our travel money comparison is for. Past movement doesn't predict future rates, and none of this is financial advice.

South Africa FAQs for Australian travellers
Do Australians need a visa for South Africa?
No. Australian passport holders can visit South Africa for tourism without a visa and are granted up to 90 days on arrival. Any other purpose, including work or study, requires a visa arranged in advance, and leaving and re-entering does not reset the 90 days.
How many blank passport pages do I need for South Africa?
Two genuinely blank pages, and this is strictly enforced - airlines refuse boarding without them. Endorsement pages at the back of the passport do not count. Your passport also needs at least 30 days validity beyond your intended departure.
What do I need to travel to South Africa with children?
An unabridged birth certificate naming both parents for each child under 18, plus a signed consent letter from any parent not travelling. This requirement is unusual internationally and is strictly enforced at the border, so organise the certificate well ahead - Australian ones can take weeks.
What power adapter do I need for South Africa?
A Type M adapter - a large three-round-pin plug used in almost no other country. Many universal travel adapters do not include it, so buy a South Africa-specific one before you leave rather than assuming yours covers it. The voltage is 230V, the same as Australia.
Do I need malaria tablets for South Africa?
Only for certain areas. Cape Town, the Garden Route and Johannesburg are malaria-free. Kruger National Park and the northeastern low-veld carry a risk, mainly between September and May, so see a travel doctor six to eight weeks before you go if your trip includes them.
Is it safe to drive in South Africa?
By day, yes, and it is one of the easier long-haul countries for an Australian because it drives on the left. Avoid driving between towns after dark, keep doors locked and valuables out of sight at traffic lights in Johannesburg, and use ride-hailing apps rather than walking at night in cities.
