Pack a Type C/F adapter for the 230V supply, one Australian dollar buys about 34.5 TRY.
Entry rules last checked 24 October 2026.
Türkiye removed the visa requirement for Australian passport holders on 17 April 2026. If you travelled here before that date you paid for an e-Visa; you no longer need one. Australians now get 90 days in any 180 with nothing to apply for, which makes it one of the easiest large destinations to add to a European trip.

Best time to visit
April-May and September-October
Istanbul is pleasant most of the year. Cappadocia gets very cold from December to February and the balloons are grounded whenever the wind is up, in any season.

Busiest month for Australian travellers: October, quietest March. Türkiye travel statistics
Health & safety
Smartraveller: Exercise a high degree of caution
Australia has no reciprocal health care agreement with Türkiye. Private hospitals in Istanbul and the coastal resorts are good but expect payment or an insurer guarantee up front.
Emergency: 112 for everything
Money
Very good in cities and resorts, including contactless. Bazaars, dolmus minibuses and small rural businesses are cash-only.
Use bank ATMs (Ziraat, Garanti, Is Bankasi) and always decline their conversion offer. Withdraw lira, not euros.
Tipping: Around 10% in restaurants, and rounding up for taxis. Tipping is more expected here than in most of Europe.
Language & culture
Turkish
English: Good in Istanbul tourist areas and coastal resorts, limited elsewhere

Last recorded rate
These are mid-market rates - the rate banks trade at, published by the European Central Bank. It is not what you will be offered. Expect a card or exchange service to take 0.5% to 5% off it, which is exactly what our travel money comparison is for. Past movement doesn't predict future rates, and none of this is financial advice.

Türkiye FAQs for Australian travellers
Do Australians need a visa for Turkey?
No, not since 17 April 2026. A presidential decision removed the visa requirement for holders of ordinary Australian passports travelling for tourism or transit. You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period with nothing to apply for.
Do I still need a Turkey e-Visa as an Australian?
No. The e-Visa requirement for Australians ended on 17 April 2026. Third-party websites still selling a "Turkey e-Visa for Australians" are charging for a document you do not need - check the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or your nearest Turkish consulate.
How long is my passport valid enough for Turkey?
It must have at least six months validity from your date of arrival. Airlines check this at Australian check-in, so a passport with five months left will stop you boarding regardless of how short your trip is.
Does my Europe eSIM work in Turkey?
Often not. Türkiye is not in the EU and many regional Europe plans exclude it. Check the covered-country list, or buy a Türkiye-specific eSIM, which is usually cheaper anyway.
Can I drink the tap water in Turkey?
It is chlorinated and fine for brushing your teeth, but Turks drink bottled water and visitors should too. It is inexpensive and sold everywhere.
Do I need an International Driving Permit in Turkey?
Yes. Türkiye requires foreign drivers to carry a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit with their home licence. Apply through your state motoring club in Australia before you leave.
Planning Türkiye?
We will send you the Türkiye guide as it grows - what to book before you go, which eSIM and travel card are worth it there, and what things actually cost in Australian dollars.
