Australia to Indonesia: direct routes and connection risk 🇮🇩

4,679,115 passengers flew directly between Australia and Indonesia in the twelve months to June 2026. The busiest route is Perth to Denpasar with 1,165,021, and 11 Australian airports fly there direct.

There is no published on-time record for international flights out of Australia, so this page does not invent one. What it can tell you is which airports fly there, how much traffic each route carries, and which domestic connection into those airports is the one that gets cancelled.

Direct routes between Australia and Indonesia

Passengers carried in both directions over the last twelve months. A busier route means more flights, more airlines competing on it, and more options when something goes wrong.

The connection is the part that gets cancelled

If you are not flying out of Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Darwin, Cairns, Newcastle, Sunshine Coast or Canberra, you have a domestic flight to make first, and that is the leg with a cancellation record. These are the worst of the domestic routes into the airports that fly to Indonesia, from the same BITRE data the rest of this hub uses.

Booking it so a cancellation is the airline's problem

  • Book the domestic and international legs on one ticket. Then a missed connection is the airline's to fix, and they will put you on the next flight.
  • On separate tickets the airline owes you nothing for the missed international flight. This is the single most expensive mistake in Australian travel booking.
  • If the legs must be separate, fly in the night before. A hotel costs less than a rebooked international fare, and the Canberra to Sydney rate above is why.

When Australians go to Indonesia

July is the busiest month for Australian trips to Indonesia and February the quietest. The peak is when fares and accommodation cost most, and when the cheaper insurance and eSIM options sell out first.

This page is the route record. The Indonesia flights page is where you search fares, and it carries the passport and entry rules worth checking before you pay for one.

Before you fly to Indonesia

The flights are the easy part. The Indonesia guide covers what Australian passport holders need to get in, and compares the eSIM, travel insurance and travel money options that are actually worth paying for there.

Delay and cancellation cover is the part of a travel insurance policy that matters on a trip with a connection. Buy it before anything is announced; a policy bought after a delay is public knowledge will not pay for it.
