Driving in Singapore

International Driving Permit rules and car hire for Australians.

No — your Australian licence is enough in Singapore.

Your Australian licence is accepted for up to 12 months. An IDP isn't required, though hire companies may ask for one.

What Australian drivers need to know

  • Almost no visitor needs a car. The MRT, buses and taxis cover everything and cost a fraction of driving.
  • Electronic Road Pricing tolls apply throughout the city and are billed to hire cars.
  • Parking is expensive and scarce.
  • Traffic fines are severe and strictly enforced.

Insurance warning. Australian travel insurance policies exclude claims from driving or riding without a valid licence for that vehicle in that country. A car licence does not cover a scooter — hiring one in Singapore without a motorcycle class on your Australian licence means an accident is entirely uninsured.
