Prices are indicative, shown in AUD and refreshed from provider APIs where available. Always confirm the final price on the provider's site - it is the price that applies. We may earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes what you pay. A row labelled "Featured partner" holds a paid position at the top of the table. Partners are listed before providers who pay us nothing, as our terms set out; sorting by price ignores all of that and orders on the number alone. How we make money.

Planning what to do in China

When is the best time to visit China?

April-May and September-October

Avoid Golden Week (first week of October) and Lunar New Year - domestic travel volumes are extraordinary.

How these comparisons are made

Activities listed are bookable in AUD with instant confirmation where the platform offers it. Jamie has personally booked and taken activities through the platforms recommended on this site. Editorial notes on whether something is worth pre-booking are opinions and labelled as such - a queue-skip that saves three hours in July can be pointless in February. China things to do FAQs

Do Australians need a visa for China?

Not for stays up to 30 days. China added Australia to its unilateral visa-free list in 2024, covering tourism, business and family visits. The policy has been extended repeatedly and currently runs through the end of 2026, but because it's unilateral it can change - confirm before you book.
