The connection is the part that gets cancelled

If you are not flying out of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth or Brisbane, you have a domestic flight to make first, and that is the leg with a cancellation record. These are the worst of the domestic routes into the airports that fly to Thailand, from the same BITRE data the rest of this hub uses.

Booking it so a cancellation is the airline's problem

  • Book the domestic and international legs on one ticket. Then a missed connection is the airline's to fix, and they will put you on the next flight.
  • On separate tickets the airline owes you nothing for the missed international flight. This is the single most expensive mistake in Australian travel booking.
  • If the legs must be separate, fly in the night before. A hotel costs less than a rebooked international fare, and the Canberra to Sydney rate above is why.

When Australians go to Thailand

January is the busiest month for Australian trips to Thailand and February the quietest. The peak is when fares and accommodation cost most, and when the cheaper insurance and eSIM options sell out first.

This page is the route record. The Thailand flights page is where you search fares, and it carries the passport and entry rules worth checking before you pay for one.

Before you fly to Thailand

The flights are the easy part. The Thailand guide covers what Australian passport holders need to get in, and compares the eSIM, travel insurance and travel money options that are actually worth paying for there.

Delay and cancellation cover is the part of a travel insurance policy that matters on a trip with a connection. Buy it before anything is announced; a policy bought after a delay is public knowledge will not pay for it.
