Best time to visit
April-June and September-October
Inland Spain in July and August regularly passes 40C. The north coast stays mild all summer and is the better choice in those months.

Busiest month for Australian travellers: October, quietest March. Spain travel statistics
Health & safety
Smartraveller: Exercise normal safety precautions
Australia has no reciprocal health care agreement with Spain. You pay for treatment up front, and an air ambulance home is the cost that turns a bad week into a bad decade.
Emergency: 112 for everything
Money
Very good, including contactless in bars and on transport. Some small tapas bars and markets still prefer cash.
Use bank ATMs (Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank) and decline their conversion offer. Euronet machines in tourist areas charge heavily.
Tipping: Minimal and not expected. Round up or leave small change in a bar; 5-10% in a good restaurant is generous rather than standard.
Language & culture
Spanish (Castilian)
English: Good in Barcelona and Madrid tourist areas, limited elsewhere - Spain has lower English proficiency than most of Western Europe
Capital: Madrid

Last recorded rate
These are mid-market rates - the rate banks trade at, published by the European Central Bank. It is not what you will be offered. Expect a card or exchange service to take 0.5% to 5% off it, which is exactly what our travel money comparison is for. Past movement doesn't predict future rates, and none of this is financial advice.

Spain FAQs for Australian travellers
Do Australians need a visa for Spain?
No. Australian passport holders can enter Spain visa-free for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period, drawn from the Schengen Area allowance shared across all Schengen countries.
Do I need an International Driving Permit in Spain?
Yes. Spain requires foreign drivers to carry a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit with their Australian licence. Apply through your state motoring club before you leave Australia.
What power adapter do I need for Spain?
A Type C or F adapter, the round two-pin European plug. Spain runs on 230V at 50Hz, identical to Australia, so all your devices work normally.
Is Spain cheaper than the rest of Western Europe?
Yes, noticeably. Food, wine, accommodation and car hire all cost less than in France or Italy, and a menu del dia lunch is among the best value meals in Europe. Barcelona and the Balearics are the exceptions in peak season.
How bad is pickpocketing in Barcelona?
It is the most common problem Australians report in Spain, concentrated on Las Ramblas, the metro and the beachfront. It is theft by distraction rather than anything violent - keep your phone off the table and your bag closed and in front of you.
Does the EU Entry/Exit System apply in Spain?
Yes. The EES has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. Your fingerprints and facial image are recorded at your first Schengen border crossing, and entries and exits are logged digitally instead of stamped in your passport.
