Ireland is in the EU but not the Schengen Area, which is the single most useful thing to know before you plan a European trip around it: days in Ireland do not count against your Schengen 90, and there is no ETIAS or UK ETA involved either. Australians get up to 90 days on arrival with nothing to apply for.

Ireland at a glance for Australians

Best time to visit

May-September

It rains in every month. May and June have the longest days and the least of it; the shoulder months are quieter and the west coast is at its best.

Busiest month for Australian travellers: July, quietest February. Ireland travel statistics

Health & safety

Smartraveller: Exercise normal safety precautions

Australia has no reciprocal health care agreement with Ireland. You pay for treatment up front, and an air ambulance home is the cost that turns a bad week into a bad decade.

Emergency: 112 or 999

Money

Very good, including contactless nearly everywhere. Some rural pubs and B&Bs still prefer cash.

Bank ATMs (AIB, Bank of Ireland, PTSB) are reliable and fee-free for withdrawals.

Tipping: Around 10% in a restaurant if service is not already added. Not expected in pubs, where you order and pay at the bar.

Last recorded rate

These are mid-market rates - the rate banks trade at, published by the European Central Bank. It is not what you will be offered. Expect a card or exchange service to take 0.5% to 5% off it, which is exactly what our travel money comparison is for. Past movement doesn't predict future rates, and none of this is financial advice.

Ireland FAQs for Australian travellers

Do Australians need a visa for Ireland?

No. Australian passport holders can visit Ireland without a visa and are normally granted up to 90 days on arrival. There is no arrival card and nothing to apply for in advance.

Does time in Ireland count against my Schengen 90 days?

No. Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen Area, so days spent here are entirely separate from your Schengen 90/180 allowance. It is a useful place to spend time in the middle of a long European trip for exactly that reason.

Does a UK ETA cover Ireland?

No. The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation admits you to the United Kingdom only. Ireland is a separate country with its own rules and requires no authorisation from Australians. If your trip includes both Britain and Ireland you need the UK ETA for the British portion.

Will ETIAS apply to Ireland?

No. ETIAS covers the Schengen Area, and Ireland is not part of it. When ETIAS launches you will not need one to visit Ireland.

What power adapter do I need for Ireland?

A Type G adapter - the same three-rectangular-pin plug used in the UK. Ireland runs on 230V at 50Hz, the same as Australia, so only the plug shape differs.

Do I need an International Driving Permit in Ireland?

No. An Australian licence is accepted for visits up to 12 months, and Ireland drives on the left like Australia, which makes it one of the easier European countries to hire a car in.
